A homeless man will be spending Christmas with his family for the first time in 12 years after a Facebook appeal helped reunite them

George Cunningham, who is living rough in Cork, Republic of Ireland, can look forward to a meal with his sister Sheelagh and his ill mother thanks to photographer Lee Furlong.

During a conversation he told the snapper, who works for photography website Humans of Ireland, he needed to find somewhere to eat Christmas dinner.

This led Furlong to make an appeal on Facebook, which caught the attention of Cunningham’s sister, who he hadn’t seen in 12 years.

‘George called to tell me that he was returning to the family home next Wednesday,’ Furlong said.

‘We had a really nice chat, he sounded so upbeat compared to our first meeting.

‘I hope he enjoys Christmas dinner with his family this year.’

If he hadn’t found the perfect place to have Christmas dinner, Cunningham had plenty of other offers thanks to the appeal.

Unsurprisingly he said he was finding the whole situation hard to believe.
